It has been way too long since I have felt up to doing a blog update, but I finally got down here to the computer to put a few words on the page. Well, Lia and I are doing excellent. We are getting some final addendums done to my medical board for medical retirement done, and we should be getting ready to out-process from the service. I just recently, 6 days ago, had a hernia repair surgery done, and it was a success. So, for the last 6 days, I have pretty much been in the bed. I was given 21 days of convalesence leave to heal up and get better. So, LIA has been taking care of daddy. She's been giving me the motivation to get out of bed each day and go for a little excercise in the front yard. It's a painful surgery, to say the least. Well, I hope all is well with everyone, and as soon as I'm 100%, i'll update again with more info about me and LIA.

Been a long time.

Well, I've been a bad blogger here as of late, with all the things going on in my crazy life. LIA and I are doing well together, as always, and I'm really glad I have her by my side right now. Anxiety made a comeback for me here about a week ago, and I had somewhat of an attack, but LIA kept me moving and assured me that i could beat it. I have this problem with wearing my uniform, as I am not proud of a lot of the things I have done wearing it. Well, my command knew that, and still FORCED me to put it on and stand duty in the barracks. Now, I understand I am a Marine still and that I am expected to do certain things. But when someone knows that something(wearing my uniform) triggers my anxiety and anger reactions, and still decides to put me in that situation to get a rise of me, boggles my mind. Once I assured them, that that wasn't a good place for me to be, they took me off duty and myself and LIA strolled down to the river and took some time to throw the ball around and relax. She's a lifesaver. Amazing. Every day I find a new way she helps me, and sometimes it's just her giving me a lick on the back of my hand when i'm stressed, or her giving me a "hug". I'm blessed, truly. Well, i will keep you as updated as I can remember to. Working on my memory and trying to get things together.

Paul

Good afternoon.

Well, hello again, everyone. It's a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and LIA and myself, are standing Barracks Duty at the Wounded Warrior Barracks. It's a nice change of pace, as of late. I have just returned from leave for 23 days back home, and we were constantly busy, visiting friends, family, and getting out as much as possible. I know that LIA is my service dog and that she is there to make me more comfortable in public settings and in helping me get through my PTSD symptoms, but I feel this "responsibility" to spread the word of what these animals are doing for so many people with disabilities. While in Raleigh, I made sure to go to as many places as possible, and just be seen with LIA. We ran into no issues with anyone and it's great that people have a knowledge of service animals. But I feel that since everyone has done so much for me, the least I can do, is spend a few minutes everyday telling strangers and business owners about the organization and what you guys do. It's truly been a rewarding experience and I have been getting positive feedback from most. It's great to know that. I tried to show our faces (mine and LIA's) in Raleigh as much as possible, since it's highly likely, that's where I'll spend my next few years at. I feel like a new man. I feel renewed, rejuvinated, and refreshed by what I am able to do now. LIA is my right-hand "lady", and we're taking the world by storm. haha.
Well, another way me and LIA have bonded, beyond my PTSD issues and my anxiety, was something I didn't see coming a couple weeks back. My girlfriend and I split and it was a new kind of pain, new kind of feeling, for the first time in a LONG time. Only when LIA got here, did I have the confidence to be put in that situation, and even though, we are no longer together, LIA knew I was feeling hurt and heartbroken and never once, left my side for a couple of days. Even when we went outside to throw the ball or to let her HURRY, she would only go about an arms' length away. I shed a few tears, but LIA licked them right off my face and put a smile back on mine. It's amazing how she has made everything so much easier. Now, I understand i'm going to still feel pain and heartache, but she made something she wasn't trained to do, so much easier. She is my best friend on this whole earth, and I'd be lost without her. As we sit here at the duty desk, she must know that I'm typing about her, because she's looking intensly, at the screen. :) Well, that's enough for today. I'll definitely be blogging more, as I am back off leave and getting ready to work with Chadd on the Camp Lejeune program. Thanks so much for reading my random blog, bouncing all around. Enjoy your weekend.

Great time off

Hello, all. It's been a great vacation these past two weeks. LIA and I have been about everywhere. I have one important update that I thought would be noteworthy.
Most times when LIA and I go out to eat, there is usually someone else with us. Well, I've been slowly getting used to lunchtime traffic in busy restaurants and it's been tough. But Wednesday, we DID IT!!! We went to the Red Lobster in Raleigh. It was slam-packed full of people on their lunches, but we entered with confidence and were seated right away. The staff was so friendly, and for being a town not military-oriented, they were very interested in what service dogs are doing for PTSD. Now, I try and spread the word about Paws4Vets and Paws4People as much as I can. I surely think they got the message after lunch. It was very nice to be with just me and LIA, eating and relaxing in a chaos filled restaurant. Someone even picked up my lunch and paid anonymously. Brought a tear to my eye that there are quite a bit of people who absolutely appreciate our service and the things that Paws4Vets is doing to make our lives' easier and managable. Without you guys and LIA, there isn't any telling what I'd be doing right now. It's truly a blessing to have had this intervention. I love you, all and you are my angels. God Bless and goodday.

WHEW

Good morning, everyone. Been very very busy these last few weeks, but things are slowing down and I'm on a little bit of rest and relaxation time, at home for a few weeks. July 4th is among us and LIA and I will be spending it with my girlfriend and her family at White Lake. I'm slowly but surely waiting on the Marine Corps to make their minds up and get me out, and home. LIA has been doing excellent. She's got this barking thing she does when we are out of town, when someone comes in the house, but she's getting better about it. Raleigh presents a new challenge for me and LIA. There are so many places to go that have never seen a service dog in their establishment. We've been blessed thus far and peoples' knowledge is very high. Yesterday, we went to one of the larger malls in the area and got a warm welcome. I was a little rattled by all the people in their, it being a holiday weekend and all, but LIA stuck close and we got through it without incident. Things have definitely taken a turn for the better with my symptoms and all. I haven't had a nightmare in quite some time now, and the only real problem has been my headaches. Together, LIA and I are tackling all my issues as they come at me, and rolling with the punches, so to say. I will keep everyone posted and hopefully be able to post some pictures from this week at the Lake. Hope everyone has a blessed and safe Independence Day. :)

A couple pictures.

Good afternoon, all. It's busy busy busy busy here nowadays. Trying to complete all my appointments to separate from the Marine Corps and retire medically. I have been keeping busy, trying to get things in order to move back to my hometown. It'll be a very nice change of pace. Anyways, LIA and I have been doing GREAT. With the weather so beautiful, we have been keeping active and getting to the beach as often as possible. Haven't ran into any real problems, but a few people, in certain public businesses are still a little uneducated about Service Dogs and their rights. Nothing that after speaking with a manager, couldn't be solved. Just an education issue with employers/employees. I'm blessed to have the most wonderful friend by my side, to help me keep my cool in those situations. If she wasn't there, I'd definitely be a little more aggressive. So, problems averted and we continue to move forwardly, making progress with my PTSD. LIA and I have spoken to the VA in the Raleigh/Durham area about transferring my care and making sure there is not a lapse in my psychiatric care. So, I'm beginning to get a hold on the idea of being back home. :) Here are a few pictures I took yesterday, since I finally got a camera. Enjoy your Sunday, everyone.

It's been a while...

Good evening, everyone. It has been a good bit of time since I was on here to blog last. I have been busy, as me and LIA take on the world. Things couldn't be better right now. LIA and I traveled to Portsmouth, VA to see the neurosurgeon about two weeks ago. The news was mostly good, considering that I probably won't have to have surgery, pending one final test. If the results come back in, this pituitary tumor will just have to become a part of me.
Everyone has been telling me how "normal" I am becoming. I can only attribute this success to my right-hand gal, LIA. She has consistently been my rock. She continues to give me that nudge to just keep on pushing, and worry about today. No more thinking about what was, just what will be.
I did have a nightmare four nights ago, in which I awoke to LIA laying on my arm, licking my face. I immediately knew that I was not in Iraq, and that I was in my bed at home. I was able to fall back asleep and let it go from my mind. The next day, even in the living room, LIA wouldn't leave my hip. On the sofa, she would lay her head on my lap and I knew, as I already did before, that this is best thing that has happened to me in a good many years. My best friend is letting the things that once crippled me, become minor inconsistencies in my days.
Well, since I have been trying to get out as much as possible, and spend time in the sun, we traveled to Topsail Island with my girlfriend this weekend. LIA absolutely loves the sand at the beach and it really puts a smile on my face to see those ears perk up at the waves coming and going. She's still a little unsure why they do that, but I can tell she's getting used to it. We went to a local seafood restaurant on the island, and everyone was very welcoming of Alicia, LIA, and I. The community here, and in the surrounding areas, thanks to Paws4Vets, has become so aware of what service animals, like LIA, can do. She was absolutely PERFECT in this restaurant. Now, let me give a little description of the setting. Very RITZY (i think I spelled that right) place, with candles and such, and on the ocean. Very much not my normal atmosphere, but LIA made it so easy to just sit in peace IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RESTAURANT. Never in my life, did I imagine I would be able to sit in the middle of a crowded, fancy restaurant again. Just didn't seem like it would ever be. LIA has gotten very used to what makes me uneasy and knows when to give me that nudge on my hand, to let me know it's "all good", as they say. Once we were seated, I was comfortable in the environment, and conversating with Alicia. We ate our meal, walked on the beach, and headed to our hotel for the evening. We all sat on the balcony as the sun went down, and LIA loved the wind whipping. Great weekend getaway.
Now, I have said it before, and I will say it over and over again. LIA, the paws4vets/paws4people organization, and everyone behind me, have changed my life. I have nothing but the utmost respect for all of you who have helped me overcome, what I once thought would be the end of me. In my darkest of hours, you all saw something in me, to be persistent and to continue to motivate me. Thanks to you, and of course, Miss LIA, I am where i am today. I could go on for hours about what you have done for one tired Marine. You all have a special place in my heart. Thanks again.

Well, it's a little late and I should get some sleep. Have a great week everyone.

-Paul

11:55 a.m. wednesday

Good afternoon, everyone. It's been a while since I have gotten a chance to blog, two weeks at least. Things have been looking up medically for me. I am almost positive that surgery will not be neccessary at this point. My pain is being managed well and I am getting more active again. LIA has been completely by my side the whole time. It's been important for me to have her there as "my rock" when life's tests roll in.
I just read the story about the family and their service animal being kicked out of a store. I really do hope that the awareness of service animals picks up and people realize that these animals are changing lives. LIA has completely changed my life and made my everyday challenges into mere speedbumps. Sure, there will be hard times ahead, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

LIA and I started the Paul get-back-in-shape program with beach walks/river walks yesterday. I hope to be able to do it four times a week, if my headaches will allow it.

LIA has been doing great. In the last few weeks, we have been a bunch of places and seen a bunch of new things. We went to Portsmouth Naval Medical Center for my appointments with the neurosurgeons. We went to many local Norfolk businesses and spent some time sitting by the water. Weather wasn't the best to do that it, but it worked out. I have noticed in the local area and all military locations that I have been to, that the military members and civilians on post, know what LIA is doing in the store, or restaurant. For the most part, we have had it smooth with the public aspect since she arrived, minus the small gas station incident.

Hope everyone enjoyed their Easter Holiday.

Semper Fi,
Paul

Medical update

Hi everyone. Hope everyone is doing alright. It's a beautiful day here in Jacksonville, nc. Had a doctors appointment today , and am being referred to a neurosurgeon for the brain tumor. Should be no big deal, but im a worrier, so it's got me a little jaded. I had some temporary vision loss last evening, and they think it'll be a good idea to get the tumor out so i can stop having the pain and eye issues. I am definitely all for it. LIA is doing awesome. She sat there with me today in the examination room and came right up to me when I got the news that I'd probably have to have surgery. She is my best friend on earth. And she knows me better than anyone. It's an affirmation to what these dogs can do. Well, time to get some rest.

article

hi all! it's kyria invading paul's blog....just wanted to leave a link to the wonderful article in which paul and LIA are stars (again). please check it out, they are such a great team!

Sorry it has been so long.

Sorry guys for the long time in between blogs. i have been rather busy with appointments and getting things military-like sorted out. LIA and i have been having a grand time. We have been hitting the beach up and the restaurants that way due to the insanely great weather. It's been cooperating with everything.
Well, two or three weeks ago, I was diagnosed with a pituitary microadenoma. it is a brain tumor in my pituitary gland and can cause a number of problems, which I am having some of those. I went to raleigh and saw a specialist who told that it is not cancerous. LIA went with me and it was great having her there to get me through the whole thing. It's not always good to hear you have a brain tumor, but with everyone's prayers and having LIA to look to in those moments of doubt, i got through it. They did some follow up blood work and decided i have high cortisol levels which explains my weight gain. Right now, they have decided not to do surgery, due to the relatively small size of the lesion. So, that's always good news.
This whole tumor thing, got me down for a couple weeks, but LIA was there to get me through every single day. We kept moving forward, going on walks, going out to eat and shop, and she's been keeping my PTSD at bay. I have had some nightmares, both affiliated with my combat experience and not, and she has woken me up every time. She is so good at reading my mood and knowing that she needs to get closer and let me pet her. It's been really a gratifying experience. I knew before and saw how much she helped me, but with this curveball thrown into the equation, she has helped me get clear of it. I am back on top and going to take it as it comes, with LIA by my side. Thank you everyone for undying support of me and LIA. I can't say enough about you guys for being there for me. You took a chance with an unstable guy, and I would like to think I've suprised the masses. Well, time for a haircut. i will be on here blogging every day or every other day. Again, sorry for the gap in blogs.

This past week has been great...

Sorry it took me so long to get an update here on the blog, but internet here in the bricks is wireless and when it's down, it's down. Things have been great since my battle buddy LIA arrived. We have taken my problems in stride and pushed through them. I am still working on a lot of them, but they are all managable with LIA by my side. The weather here has been crazy and one day it's 60 degrees and sunny and the next it's 30 and raining. Typical Camp Lejeune weather. Not much to update on. We met with Terry, Kyria, and Buf at the MCX annex on Thursday. It was great seeing them again, even though I am going to spend two weeks with them starting the 8th. I am looking forward to helping influence other veterans and service members. It is an exciting process. Yesterday, I took LIA out to Topsail Island while the weather held and she loved it. We ate at Buddy's Saloon on the water and she was great. Everyone there was so interested in her and I spread the word of the organization. Then, we walked a little ways on the beach. She isn't so sure of the waves, since they come and they go. She would walk towards the water when they went out, then run back when they came in again. It was pretty cool. I will take the video camera on the next outing and get some footage. Well, that is that until next time.

FYI

A quick little tidbit here. Today, Lia and I are taking the 2 hour trip to Raleigh for the All Ford Classic Car Show at the fairgrounds with our automotive team here at the Wounded Warrior Bn. I am excited, not just for the show, but Lia meeting some of my family, since I am from Raleigh. My brother has not met her yet, so I figured I would knock that out. My mom hasn't seen Lia in a while, so she is excited to see her again. Overall, I am excited about getting out of Jacksonville for a day. Plus, maybe Lia will pick up on some of my love for classic automobiles. She already loves riding in the '56 Fairlane my buddy owns. So, should be a great day with my girl. We have been getting used to everything here in Jacksonville, and slowly, integrating into the places we haven't been yet. Yesterday, we went a lot of places. We went to the two Food Lions that I frequent for food. We went to Wal-Mart, PetSmart, and to PostNet. Everyone in town is giving us a warm reception. Lia is famous here in Jacksonville. It is very nice to walk into a restaurant or business, and everyone know who we are and what Lia is there for. I have become a new person. A person without so many boundaries. I'm still getting used to the large crowds but Lia is really making it easier. Today, we went to the Auto Hobby Shop where we worked on a friend of mines car. Since the gas station incident, she is very well-known on base, also. They were happy to have her there, and the fact that I will be in there more often is good to know. We went for a pretty good walk about two hours ago, and she loves the river. We go down to the point sometimes for sunset and watch the small waves. She has gotten used to the seagulls. occasionally, they may get a look from her, but other than that, not too much attention is payed. Overall concensus: Lia is a lifesaver. Literally. She has saved my life and saved my family a lot of pain. Before Terry and Co. gave me my ultimatum, I was determined that I had no purpose being here. My thought process was that if my friends weren't here anymore, why should I be? Lia changed that. She gave me something to look forward to every month. Something to work for. Recovery. Now that she is here with me 24/7, there is no obstacle I cannot conquer. Long story short, Lia is my best friend and my compandre. Some people think I am a little off my rocker so to say, because I talk to her constantly. Some would say that she doesn't understand, but I know that she does and our bond is solid and confirmed. I even notice her mannerisms for wanting something. She'll turn her head left when I ask if she needs something. Then, it's a matter of time before i figure exactly what she needs. It's great. There is nothing we cannot get through together. Thanks from the bottom of my heart Paws4Vets. We got about 6 inches and Lia loved it. We went for a little walk yesterday down the path through the woods. It was very cold so we didn't go too far. We then, went out to the mall and Old Navy, and PetSmart. She is doing so good in the public setting. It's been great since she got here. Well, today ,we plan on going shopping for a new pair of shoes and hitting a restaurant for dinner. Should be a little bit better today, weather-wise, since the sun is out and melting the snow away. I look forward to got for a walk this afternoon. Another update for everyone on Lia and me. Last week, on Friday, I did an interview with the Jacksonville Daily News here in NC. Today's front page was a beautiful picture of Lia resting her head on the bench outside the barracks. It is a well-written article and I think did a great deed to the organization. I was reluctant to do the interview because that is very public and something I'll have to get used to. Here is the article!!!! Well, for today, we went to the mall to get a movie to watch tonight. Everyone there knew who she was and we got a great number of compliments. She did amazing there. We then, went to the local gyro shop for a sandwich with a good friend of mine and fellow wounded warrior, Tony Sayo. Again, they knew who she was and greeted us with a great deal of respect. They had the paper already on the wall, with their other newspaper clippings. After the sandwich shop, we went to get my haircut. That was a little weird, as we hadn't done that public place yet. But it worked beautifully and she kept her composure around a loud group of guys.

To follow up on the MCCS Gas station incident here on base:
I spoke with Mr. Salau about the incident this morning, and he quickly spearheaded this problem. He emailed the Operations Officer for the Marine Corps Community Services(MCCS) division here on base and the issue was quickly responded to. The officer then sent out a mass-email to his subordinates in the retail division(gas stations, px, etc.) about the fact that "service animals are allowed in all MCCS places of business and activities." I was so impressed with how quick Mr. Salau had this handled. Hopefully, this will mitigate the issue before it happens again. Great job by Ed.

Weekend Fun:
We had a great, quiet weekend. It was our first couple days off, so to say, from my duties as a Marine. We went for a nice long walk down through the woods by the river, to my old batallion area. We through the ball around for a good hour on Saturday, after this walk. Yesterday, I walked her down to the park about a 1/2 mile down the road. She loved the riverfront and the little sandy, beach-type area. She wanted to go in the water so bad, but it was way to cold and that river is pretty dirty. But, she loved the sand on her paws and the small waves crashing. She is getting used to the abnormally-large population of sea gulls here on base. They were all over the park, and after a few minutes, she wasn't even paying them any mind. I will take the camera next time. We also went out to Onslow Beach here on base. She absolutely loved it! Again, I think it's the sand on her paws that makes it fun. She loved the waves and the crashing sounds. We sat there and enjoyed the surf for a good hour. It was nice. Great first weekend together.

I apologize to all for not blogging everyday this first few weeks together, but I have a kind of weird internet situation. My computer only works when it wants to, not when I need it. So, I will continue to do my best to get on here once a day to blog. Thanks to everyone who has made this all possible, me having the best life that I think i could possibly have at this moment. Until next time...

Lia has arrived...

Lia got here Tuesday afternoon to be here permenantly. She has been doing great. She is really getting used to being with me 24/7 and is getting used to the base. Lia has met the important people of the barracks and everyone knows she is here. I did put a sign on the door to let everyone know that she is in the room and that they shouldn't BANG on the doors. Not only would it wake/startle her, it would get me too. So far, so good. We have been to the Wal-Mart today and got some treats, waste bags, and a new bone. The community seems to be embracing her with me. I did a brief interview with the Jacksonville Daily News about Lia arriving. It sounds like that will help with getting the word out that Lia will be around town with me, and maybe people won't be startled to see her inside their establishments. Well, back to the beginning of this blog, Kyria brought Lia here on Tuesday afternoon. We got back in the groove of being together. Wednesday, we stuffed the public access test and some training into one day. Weather up north wasn't agreeing with the plan so Kyria had to leave earlier than expected. No problem. Lia did FLAWLESSLY on the PAT. I was so proud. We had a good session and got some of my questions answered. That was Wednesday. Yesterday, we had a great day. We did have a little altercation at the gas station on base. We entered, spent maybe 4 minutes in the store browsing, and approached the register. The attendant was very friendly and greeted me and Lia. They were happy to see a service dog on base. Then, the manager yelled from her office that "If that isnt a see-and-eye dog, they can't be here." I, without getting upset right away, simply stated that she was a service dog and had every right to be here. She said that since food was served, she couldn't be. I then presented her ID card with her certifications and stated that under federal law, she can be where I am. Well, the manager was not receiving any information that day, so before getting completely "ticked" off, I left. I informed paws4people, and left it at that. I had a plan in my mind of what I should do, to educate the staff at the gas station. But, that could of turned into something I wouldnt want. It's in the past now, and can only hope that they are caught up on the current laws concerning service dogs. I didn't let it ruin our day. While the weather held out, we went for a walk down to the obstacle course and threw the ball around for a while. One thing i forgot to mention, was that Wednesday Lia had a microchip inserted for the on-base requirement to be met. it was painful, I can only imagine, but she recovered well. It was a good trip all together to the PetSmart/Banfield A.H. I was very proud of my girl this week, and look forward to many more weeks, months, and years together. I can only imagine how great things are gonna be from now on. Well, I will make sure to make an entry tomorrow. We should have a quiet evening and maybe watch a movie. Have a great weekend, everyone.

Today is the day!!!

It's 0234, and I haven't slept a wink. I am so excited about this afternoon, I can barely sit still. It has been a long road coming, but boy, was it worth it. I have looked forward to every outing and trip up to West Virginia to train with the Paws4People staff, but this tops the cake. Lia; here with me; for good. It's great.
Alright, enough of me talking about later today. I am pretty sure I have a pretty good plan set up for the week. Kyria and Co. will be here about 1500 today. I have Lia an appointment at the vet to get her chip for the on-base requirement Wednesday @1400. So, that will be one of our first trips to the vet together. It is amazing to think that now I wont have to go anywhere alone. Lia is going to kick this agorophobia in the butt, and we'll be off and rolling. Also, some preparations with Kelli for Lia and I, in regards to the PAT will be done Wednesday at 1000. I am sure it is going to be a great week. Well, off to catch some sleep, if possible. I will make sure to blog in the next few days with an update.
-Paul

Dec-Jan. Happenings

Well, I know it has been a while since I have had the opportunity to get on here and blog, but I've been keeping a running "tab" of what to add. The time is near, and Lia will be here at Camp Lejeune with me in the next two weeks. I am prepared and ready to take on the world as it comes with my best friend by my side. In December, I once again traveled to Morgantown, WV to spend a week with Lia. As always, I felt like a "new" man having her with me in the hotel and with me. We participated in some training with the trainers at Hazleton, and did many public outings, that on a normal occassions, I would not be able to do alone. It only strengthens, in my mind, how much she is going to help me. I can only look forward to the rest of my life, now. Having Lia with me, to be my "rock" is going to reinforce my new way of being. Lia is the best thing that has happened to me.

In January, Terry, Kyria, Brandon, and Allison came to Camp Lejeune to meet with an esteemed member of my batallion and to brief him on everything pertaining to Paws4Vets. I was lucky to have sat in on that briefing and to learn mroe about the organization in its roots and plans. I attended dinner with them, and another client, Buff, the night prior and had a wonderful time. Brandon brought Wyatt, which is always cool. Just having a service dog in the room makes me feel better, knowing that he is there for his buddy. Lia will be here Feb. 2nd tenatively.

This morning, I was saddened to find out that a great friend of mine, and fellow Marine veteran of Iraq, took his own life on Sunday. With my past with suicidal thoughts and actions, it really hits hard. I know how tough dealing with PTSD and dealing with doctors and people can be. It is not an easy road, but Lia has given me a new lease on life. In the future, I can only hope that my involvment in this organization can mitigate days like today. I can only hope that I reach out to those, as Terry and Co. have reached me. This is a great thing, Paws4Vets. This is something that everyone should believe in and accomadate. Signing off now, to take care of things, but please say a prayer for all of those veterans who struggle day-to-day with post traumatic stress disorder. Semper Fidelis.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://paul-paws4vets.blogspot.com/2010/01/dec-jan-happenings.html' title='Dec-Jan. Today is my last day with Lia for this trip up. It's been eventful and exciting, especially for her. My mother and I got into Leesburg on Wednesday evening and Allison dropped off my girl at our hotel. She had a little bit of an upset stomach, but it cleared up by Friday. On Thursday, Allison picked us up and we went to Hillsboro Elementary to read with the kids. This was Lia's first time going to a school for this program and she did phenomenal. After getting used to her surroundings, she laid right down and listened attentively to the kids' reading. Later on Thursday, we went with Allison to a Cub Scouts meeting for a presentation. Speaking publicly makes me very anxious, but having Lia with me allowed me to ease into the scenario and grab it by the horns. We had a great time and the kids loved Lia. They asked very good questions about Lia and the two of us. Overall, Thursday was a great day of new experiences for the both of us. I must add, before I forget, that Lia is a "snorer." She has a very loud snore and it's hilarious. Anyways, back to the training! On Friday, we departed Leesburg en route to Morgantown where we would finish the week out. We attended the Welcome dinner at the Cracker Barrel at 1830. It was great meeting so many people involved in this organization and see old familiar faces, too. Lia did awesome and really never lost her focus. Of course, there were other service dogs there, and that was a little bit of a distraction but she refocused perfectly. I was so proud of her, and of me, for sitting in a public setting with so many people and having my buddy there to help me through it. On Saturday, we went for Lia's graduation. She is a certified Psychiatric Service Dog. It was a great presentation and ceremony that really touched me, personally. Mr. Johnson, one of her trainers', really made an impression on me. I know Lia has helped him with his obstacles, and know that she is going to be my best friend(she already is!!!). Lia was happy to see her old friends and trainers, as well as to get her new cape. She looks great in it. I'll post pictures when I can. Well, after the graduation, we attended the reception at the alumni center on campus. Lia, again, did awesome. She got to be the center of attention for the day and it really got her excited. Having her in all these public places and outings has really made it easier on me. That is one of my biggest issues, going out into public. And, she is helping me transition beautifully. Well, on Sunday, we lounged a little bit, played a little ball, and went to Cooper Rock State Park again. There were A LOT of other dogs out there, and Lia did great. She didn't bark but once, and that was just a little ruff to let them know she was there. We walked down to the overlook and sat down and enjoyed the view. Of course, after that, we had to walk the trails and let her "get her sniff on." It was nice to get out and let her just be a dog. I think that's just as important as when she's working. Gotta have that downtime to let her hair down. Anyways, today is monday and it's been relaxing. I forgot to mention that nearly everyday, we have been somewhere public to just get her feet wet and practice on keeping her focused on me in tough places. Today, we went to Wal-Mart and she did GREAT. Yesterday we went to Books-a-Million and she did awesome. I have to say, I can already drastically see the difference that she has made in my life, and I DON'T EVEN HAVE HER FULL TIME. There is so much to look forward to and getting Lia to Camp Lejeune is my number one priority. I'm still complying with treatment and doing well with my rehabilitation for my TBI, and Lia is giving me a focal point. Tonight at about 1845, Heidi will pick up Lia and we'll part ways for a little while. BUT, I am already looking forward to being back with my girl again. GREAT WEEK!!!!!

Week 2 in Morgantown with LIA

Wow. That is the only word I can seem to utter right now, thinking about my week with Lia. This was my first SYPMTOM-FREE week in a long time. No nightmares, no flashbacks, no hallucinations. It was a sign that this is one of the greatest things happening to me. Lia is that key to unlocking the potential for me to have a great life. It was a great week. I arrived Sunday night, and Kyria brought Lia to me at the hotel. She would be staying in the hotel with me for the week. It was nice having her there with me, to be my right-hand gal. Monday, we just hung out and let our bond rekindle. Tuesday, we went to Starbuck's for a little bit, and later that afternoon, we went to Hazleton to meet with Heidi and Mr. Johnson and Co. It was very helpful to speak with these gentlemen to work out some small issues I was having with Lia. But, it turned out it was me making the mistake, not her. So, I squared myself and the commands away, with the help of Heidi. Wednesday, Lia and I went to the Cooper Rock State Park and took a walk around the area, and down to the overlook. It was great and gave Lia the chance to just be a dog and enjoy the sights and smells. Thursday, we met Heidi at PetCo. Had a little trouble keeping Lia focused at first, but after a few dry runs and plenty of treats/praise, things fell in to order. She did so good! We went into Target and some shoe store, also. She did so awesome. I really feel that me and Lia were meant to be together, helping each other. On Friday, I met Kyria, Heidi, and Mr. Henry at the Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Lia was so responsive to me and we were seeing "eye-to-eye." After breakfast, I followed Heidi and Mr. Henry to the Morgantown prison for a presentation. This was were I said my goodbyes to Lia and headed home. It was a GREAT trip and I enjoyed every minute with Lia. I look forward to the next time we get to hang out, and to eventually having her placed with me.

Day Four with Lia

Heidi dropped Lia off this morning at about 0800 again. Just as yesterday, got to feed her her breakfast. This is helping me get used to the daily routine of having her around. Great. Just makes me feel a great purpose again. We met Mr. Henry and Heidi at 1000 at the local Cracker Barrel and Lia did great, considering everyone there. After a conversation, we headed to wal-mart, in order for Lia to walk with me around the store. Mr. Henry and Heidi walked behind us to see how we would do. I was 100% amazed how great she was. I did my best to keep her attention on me, considering the always enormous amount of people at Wal-Mart. She never lost her focus and completely showed me what these animals are capable of doing. Again, reinforced everything I felt that Lia could do for me. Kept me confident in a place where I'm not too comfortable, either. We then embarked on the journey through PetCo. This was heaven for Lia. I can only imagine how great it is for her to go into such a place. So many things to smell and see that are awesome to her. I learned that my voice plays a big role in how she responds to me in such a situation. Overall, today was a great day with Lia and really capped off my week here in Morgantown. I look forward to my next trip to spend the week with Lia, and get closer to hopefully having her placed with me.

Day Three with Lia

Lia got to our hotel at about 0800 this morning. I was able to feed her her breakfast and go through that routine, which helped me get used to that. We took our usual walk around the field near the hotel and let me get used to the commands that go along with having her work on the leash. Went to Panera Bread at 1400, where we met Kyria, Brandon, and Wyatt, in order to have me there for my first public place with Lia. She did very well, considering her buddy was there. I was again shocked at how well she was responding to me after only three days. Definitely gave me a new perspective on how well Lia is going to help me. Another great day. Oh, and also, Lia grabbed her own leash without me telling her, to let me know she needed to go outside. Thought that was pretty awesome.

Day Two with Lia

I met Kyria at the vet clinic this morning, in order to take Lia and pals for their check-up. After she was done, we went back to the hotel, where Lia and I went for a decent walk around the area. The weather cooperated and, again, let me get to know Lia a whole lot better. Around 1630, I met Heidi at the prison, in order to meet with Mr. Johnson and others, to learn a good bit of Lia's commands. It was a great learning experience, learning little tricks about getting Lia to respond, and going through all the commands. Very GREAT experience.

Morgantown Visit...First Day with Lia

Lia is spending the day with myself and my mother, in our hotel here in Morgantown.
